<ArticleTitle>The Effect of Chamomile Extract on Histopathological and Biochemical Changes of Fertile Female Dieabetic Rats</ArticleTitle>

		<Abstract>Abstract&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Background and Aim &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Matricaria Chamomilla (M.C) has different effects such as anti-inflammatory and anti-hyperglycemia. The aim of our study was to investigate effect of M.C extract on diabetic complications.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Materials and Methods&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The animals were allocated into five groups. The first group, and the second group were healthy, and diabetic rats that received distilled water via oral gavage. The third, fourth and fifth groups were diabetic animals that received three doses of 100, 300, and 500 mg/kg chamomile within the first 17 days of pregnancy, respectively. The levels of Blood sugar (BS), and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) were measured in the first 17 days of pregnancy then we prepared histological samples of the kidney, liver, and uterus of mother rats, and the neural tube of the fetus at the end of the study. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Results &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The chamomile extract significantly reduced the HbA1c and BS levels at the end of the 17th day (P ≤ 0.01) in the intervention groups. Also, the severity of diabetic damage in the liver and placenta was reduced in treated diabetic rats with M.C, but not reduced in the kidney. MC could cause dilatation of the central spinal canal, and spinal cord edema that may indicate the teratogenic effect on the fetus. Conclusions &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Chamomile has beneficial effects on the control of BS, and prevention of liver and placental tissue damage. Chamomile also has maybe teratogenic effects on the fetus, and it is not recommended for pregnant women.</Abstract>
