<ArticleTitle>The Antifungal Mechanism of Ethanolic and Methanolic Extracts of Teucrium polium Against Candida albicans and Candida parapsilosis</ArticleTitle>

		<Abstract>Background and Aim: The prevalence of drug resistance in fungi reveals the importance of introducing more efficient and less toxic drugs. Given the anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial qualities of Teucrium polium, this study aimed to examine the antifungal mechanism of ethanolic and methanolic extracts of this plant against Candida albicans and Candida parapsilosis.Materials and Methods: First, the methanolic and ethanolic extracts of Teucrium polium were prepared by the Soxhlet method. The antifungal effects of the extracts were determined by the agar well diffusion and MIC&lt;br /&gt;methods. Glucose, sodium, and potassium were identified in the tubes with minimum inhibitory concentration&lt;br /&gt;by autoanalyzer and flame photometry methods. Moreover, amino acids were measured by HPLC. Yeast cell&lt;br /&gt;wall alterations were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).&lt;br /&gt;Results: The MICs of the ethanolic extract of Teucrium polium on Candida albicans and Candida parapsilosis were 125 and 31.25 mg /ml, respectively, while the MICs of the methanolic extract of the plant against the test organism were 125 and 62.5 mg /ml, respectively. For both types of candida spp., ethanolic and methanolic extracts leaked out less sodium, potassium, glucose, and amino acids than amphotericin B did. Utilizing HPLC analysis, the most amino acids in tubes with the minimum inhibitory concentration of Teucrium polium extracts were glutamine, threonine, and alanine. SEM showed damage in the cell wall of Candida albicans and Candida parapsilosis.&lt;br /&gt;Conclusion: This study showed that Teucrium polium is a strong source of antifungal compounds. This plant has a mode of action similar to that of amphotericin B on the fungal cell membrane, by creating a pore in the membrane.Furthermore, based on the release rate of glucose, sodium, and potassium, the methanolic extract was&lt;br /&gt;more efficient than the ethanolic extract</Abstract>

		<Abstract>Background and Aim: Nanoparticle shells protect bioactive compounds against the environmental conditions of light, heat, and oxygen, and are also used as carriers for targeted delivery. In the present study, the anti-inflammatory effects of a chitosan-based nanogel containing Satureja Khuzestanica essential oil (SKE:NP) were studied and compared with Satureja Khuzestanica essential oil (SKE).&lt;br /&gt;Materials and Methods: Nanoparticles were prepared using the ionic gelation method. The anti-inflammatory&lt;br /&gt;effects of the chitosan-based hydrogel containing SKE, using the paw inflammatory model induced with 2.5%formalin at different times (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 24 h after subcutaneous injection), were evaluated.&lt;br /&gt;Results: Nanoparticles with a particle size of 552.8 nm, a surface charge of 24.3 mV, and an encapsulation efficiency of 30.74% were synthesized. The results of this study showed that SKE:NP (50 mg/kg) could reduce inflammation at all times (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 24 h after subcutaneous injection). The hind paw was compared with diclofenac sodium at times (0, 1, 2, 3, 4 h after subcutaneous injection), and a significant decrease in paw inflammation was observed. The lowest amount was observed in the group receiving nanogel 50 mg (0.208 g/cm3). In contrast, the amount of paw swelling in the group receiving SKE at a dose of 100 mg/kg two hours after the applied treatment was 0.441 g/cm3 (P&lt;0.0001).&lt;br /&gt;Conclusion: A comparison of the results showed that SKE:NP had more anti-inflammatory effects than SKE.Explanation of the exact mechanism of this anti-inflammatory effect requires a separate investigation.</Abstract>

		<Abstract>Background and Aim: Utilization of herbal medicines is on the rise worldwide, particularly in developing nations where it has a significant role in the health system. It is the major treatment for 60% of children with high fever caused by malaria. This study was to explore the frequency and pattern of herbal medicines utilization by children below twelve years.&lt;br /&gt;Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted at the Kumasi South Hospital on children under 12years from January 2023 to March 2023. The study is a hospital-based cross-sectional design involving 180 participants. Ethical approval with reference number (CHRPE/AP/796/23) was obtained for the study.&lt;br /&gt;Results: A total of 180 patients were eligible for the study. There were 53.9% males and 46.1% females. About 30.62% of the children were under 1-year-old, 46.60% were 1-year-old, and 22.81% were 6-12 years old. The frequency of the use of herbal medicines was 77.78%. The percentages of caregivers were 29.10%, 49.50%,7.50%, and 4.60% for fathers, mothers, grandparents, and individuals categorized as &quot;others,&quot; respectively. Age distribution percentages were 23.50%, 30.90%, and 13.90% for individuals below 20, 30-39, and above 50 years,respectively. The diseases for which health care was being sought were respiratory tract infections (35.55%) and malaria (30.55%). The routes of administration were the oral, nasal, dermal, rectal and subcutaneous areas.Aqueous preparation was the most frequently used procedure. 75% of them were not aware of the FDA guidelines not to give herbs to children. Common side effects were allergic reactions, dizziness, vomiting and nausea. Justifications for using herbs was safety, effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, availability, and cultural beliefs.Moreover, no prescription was required to obtain them.&lt;br /&gt;Conclusion: Herbal medicines are extensively used by children in Ghana. Therefore, an appropriate public health&lt;br /&gt;policy to improve their regulation is necessary.</Abstract>

		<Abstract>Background and Aim: This paper reports, for the first time, the in vivo analgesic activity (AnA) of date(Phoenix dactylifera L., variety Mech-Degla) fruit tablets along with 3 % (w/w) lyophilized aqueous extract of olive (Olea europaea) leaves (DT-OLE).
Materials and Methods: For both the date fruit powder (DFP) and olive leaves extract (OLE), flavonoids,alkaloids, tannins, saponins and anthocyanins were qualitatively identified. In the case of OLE, the qualitativescreening of phenolic compounds was also carried out using HPLC. The AnA (in%) was evaluated through the acetic acid writhing test on 30 NMRI mice.&lt;br /&gt;Results: The DT-OLE at a dose of 200 mg / kg, bw showed an interesting AnA value (42%), which is equivalent to approximately 0.44 times of that (96%) of paracetamol (taken as reference), with the DFP displaying the lowest AnA (4%). Thus, the analgesic properties of DT-OLE might be attributed to OLE, and the DFP with the&lt;br /&gt;role of the taste masking agent.&lt;br /&gt;Conclusion: The AnA of DT-OLE was demonstrated. However, further studies are required. In all cases,considering their composition, investigated tablets might be classified as healthy dried infusions, healthy natural candies or functional food.</Abstract>
