<ArticleTitle>Phytochemical Screening, Antioxidant and Gastro-Protective Activity Studies on the Fruit Peels of Selected Varieties of Banana</ArticleTitle>

		<Abstract>Background and Aim: Gastric ulcer is a chronic health condition of the gastrointestinal tract with increasing incidence and prevalence affecting both male and female population globally. There are a variety of drugs used in the treatment of this disease, but they are costly and exhibit limited efficacy, and cause adverse reactions. Hence, the present study aimed to screen the phytochemicals, antioxidant and anti-ulcer activities of the ethanolic fruit peel extracts of M. acuminata Colla, M. paradisiaca L., and M. acuminata Colla cv. Señorita. Materials and Methods: The determination of total phenolics and flavonoids were performed using conventional methods. The free radical scavenging activity of the extracts was investigated using the DPPH (1, 1-Diphenyl-2 -picrylhydrazyl). Moreover, the anti-ulcer activity was examined using three ulcer models in rats. Results: The total phenolic contents of the peel extracts ranged from 12.3 to 40.3 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g dry weight (dw), whereas the flavonoid content ranged from 2.5 to 16.6 mg GAE/g dw. The results indicated that the peel extracts exhibited free radical scavenging capacity (DPPH) that ranged from 51.52 to 72.00% at the concentration of 100 μg/mL. Moreover, the peel extracts showed gastroprotective activities against alcohol, drug, and stress-induced ulcers in rats. The maximum percentage of ulcer inhibition of the peel extracts against ethanol-induced ulcer was 83.33, whereas it was 100% against both aspirin and cold restraint stress-induced ulcers. Conclusion: The obtained results suggest that the fruit peel extracts of M. acuminata Colla, M. paradisiaca L., and M. acuminata Colla cv. Señorita have antioxidant capacities. They also exhibited anti-ulcer activities, and contained active compounds that are potentially responsible for its biological and pharmacological properties. Likewise, further explorations of the peel extracts are required, for the plant examined in this research is a promising plant potentially applicable in nutraceutical and pharmaceutical industries. </Abstract>

		<Abstract>Background and Aim: Due to the problems caused by the formation of biofilms in industry and medicine as well as the development of drug resistance, new methods are required to inhibit resistant microorganisms, particularly in the biofilm form. The aim of the present research was to determine the effect of garlic and ginger on the biofilm formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Materials and Methods: In this study, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of garlic and ginger extracts against Pseudomonas aeruginosa were assessed by microtiter plate method. Biofilm formation was investigated by the use of microtiter plate method and staining with crystal violets. Results: The minimum inhibitory concentrations of garlic and ginger extracts against ATCC 27853 standard strain Pseudomonas aeruginosa were 40 and 2.5 mg / ml respectively. Moreover, it was 80 and 20 mg / ml for ESBL, KPC and ESBL + KPC generating strains respectively. The mean percentages of the biofilm inhibition of Pseudomonas aeruginosa by garlic and ginger extracts were 61.98% and 66.81% respectively. Conclusion: Garlic and ginger extract might be used in different compounds to inhibit Pseudomonas aeruginosa and its biofilm formation. </Abstract>

		<Abstract>Background and Aim: Infantile colic is a relatively common behavioral syndrome in infancy. The main mechanism of colic is still unknown and no effective treatment is indicated for it. Recently, a relation between colic-infected children and the microbial balance changes in their intestines has been reported. Accordingly, we decided to compare the effect of probiotics with the syrup-caraway mixture on colic. Materials and Methods: In this clinical trial study, 86 infants with colic were included. Data were collected by a checklist including the duration of crying, severity of crying, crying frequency and complications of treatment which were completed during the course of the treatment through the follow-up of the infants. Infants were randomly divided into two equal-size groups based on random block design. The first group received probiotic lactobacillus reuteri (17938 DSM), and the second group received syrup-caraway mixture. The collected data were analyzed by statistical methods in SPSS version 24. Results: The mean age of the patients was 30.58±14.18 days. Two groups were similar according to age, sex, birth weight, parental education level, history of atopy in the family, history of colic in previous children and crying at presentation. There was no difference between the groups based on the crying frequency, severity of crying and duration of crying on the 7th and 15th days. Moreover, there was no difference in terms of drug side effects between two groups in the seventh and fifteenth days of treatment. Conclusion: Both probiotics and syrup-caraway mixture are effective in the treatment of colic in infancy. </Abstract>

		<Abstract>Background and Aim: A considerable number of pre-hospital emergency technicians have been negatively impacted by occupational fatigue and depression. This research was conducted to examine the effect of rosemary essential oil on the pre-hospital emergency technicians&#039; occupational fatigue and depression. Materials and Methods: Eight pre-hospital emergency stations were randomly chosen in this community trial study. Subsequently, four stations were randomly assigned to the intervention, and four stations were allocated to the placebo groups. 8 to 10 technicians were chosen from each station. In the intervention group, badges with 25% rosemary essential oil and badges impregnated with refined almond oil in the placebo group were used for two hours in 3 shifts per week. The participants completed the fatigue severity scale and the DASS-42 depression subscale before and one hour after the intervention. In this study, chi-square, paired t-test, and independent t-test were used. Results: The statistical analysis indicated no remarkable distinction between the mean occupational fatigue (p=0.17) and depression (p=0.15) scores in the two groups before the intervention. After the intervention, there were no significant differences with regard to the mean and mean changes in occupational fatigue scores between the intervention group and the placebo group (p=0.65). However, in contrast with the placebo group, significant decreases were observed in the mean and mean changes in depression scores in the intervention group one hour after the intervention (p&lt;0.001). Conclusion: Although inhaling a composition of 25% rosemary essential oil does not have any effect on the reduction of occupational fatigue, it can be useful in reducing depression in pre-hospital emergency technicians. </Abstract>

		<Abstract>Background and Aim: Nowadays, overweight and obesity are considered as major risk factors for common disorders such as metabolic syndrome, non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases, type 2 diabetes, and cardio cerebral vascular disease. Medical advice for preventing these diseases includes measures such as weight loss with diet and exercise, blood sugar and lipids control, the rise of fiber, and finally antioxidants and vitamin E consumption. Iranian traditional medicine (ITM) is a holistic medicine that introduces several remedies for the prevention and treatment of diseases through nutrition and lifestyle modifications, and administration of herbal medicines. This study examines new articles on the uses of Dava al-Balgham tablets, one of the traditional Iranian medicine products in ITM texts. Materials and Methods: Initially, the use of the combination drug, Dava al-Balgham, and its constituent herbs (Nigella sativa, Zataria multiflora, Pistacia lentiscus, and Trachyspermum ammi)  in ITM sources were searched, and then new articles in the new medicinal and pharmacology studies and databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and SID about this combined drug and its constituent herbs, were ccollected and reviewed. Results: Studies  that  have been carried out on this combined drug, have documented effects such as a reducing body mass index and abdominal circumference, reducing cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and reducing serum liver enzymes. Moreover, for herbs that make up this combination, effects such as antioxidant, hepatoprotective, lowering hepatic enzyme and lipid and glucose levels, improving digestive tract disorders such as bloating and dyspepsia have been reported. Conclusion: According to the studies conducted on the combination drug Dava al-Balgham and its constituent herbs, the effects of this drug could prevent and treat diseases such as overweight, increased blood lipids, non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases and digestive problems, including dyspepsia and bloating. </Abstract>
