Abstract
Herbal medicines have been recognized for their protective and preventive roles in respiratory health, offering a complementary approach alongside conventional therapies. These natural compounds help reduce chronic inflammation in the airways, counter oxidative stress in lung cells, and modulate immune responses to prevent excessive or harmful reactions. Evidence from laboratory, animal, and clinical studies indicates that herbal remedies such as licorice, ginger, black seed, and thyme exert anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral, and antimicrobial effects. While these benefits are promising, challenges remain in terms of standardizing extracts, determining safe and effective dosages, and validating their efficacy through rigorous clinical trials. Integrating herbal medicines into evidence-based preventive and complementary strategies could enhance patient care, reduce disease burden, and open new avenues for research. These editorial highlights the importance of recognizing the scientific potential of herbal remedies, not as alternative treatments, but as legitimate protective agents for the respiratory system. Furthermore, it underscores the responsibility of scientific journals and editors in fostering critical discussion, guiding research priorities, and promoting knowledge dissemination in this emerging field. As the global burden of respiratory diseases continues to rise, leveraging the protective properties of herbal medicines within a scientifically grounded framework may contribute to better health outcomes and a more integrative approach to respiratory care.
