Abstract
Herbal medicines constitute an evolving interdisciplinary field that integrates traditional medical knowledge with modern pharmacology, clinical research, public health, and health economics. In recent decades, advances in scientific methodologies have facilitated the transition of herbal medicines from empirical use toward evidence-based applications within healthcare systems. Beyond their therapeutic value, herbal medicinal products represent a growing sector of the global health economy, contributing to job creation, regional development, pharmaceutical innovation, and sustainable economic growth. The widespread use of herbal medicines underscores the necessity of rigorous clinical evaluation, standardization, quality control, and pharmacovigilance to ensure safety and efficacy. Pharmacological research into bioactive compounds and mechanisms of action further supports drug discovery and translational innovation. Moreover, the structured integration of herbal medicines into healthcare policies can enhance accessibility to cost-effective therapies while reducing the economic burden on health systems. This lecture highlights the multifaceted role of herbal medicines as both therapeutic resources and strategic economic assets. It also emphasizes the responsibility of scientific journals, such as The Herbal Medicines Journal (HMJ), in promoting high-quality, evidence-based, and policy-relevant research to support the sustainable development of herbal medicines within modern health systems.
